"It all starts with a child's question: Why do we draw?"
This week witnesses the release of Etienne Appert's River of Ink, a startling, sprawling reflection on art and inspiration. Appert follows the titular, metaphorical body of water, wading through the history of artistic expression. Dotted with historical characters and weaving through a story of war and love, this graphic novel—under Humanoids' Life Drawn imprint of realistic fiction and biography—employs a striking duochrome of blues and maroons in a aeons-spanning epic that swims with energy.
In addition, Etienne illustrated an interview he conducted with Scott McCloud—the iconic comics formalist and thought leader behind Making Comics, Understanding Comics, and Reinventing Comics, in addition to the fictional works The Sculptor and Zot!.
River of Ink is available online, in comic stores, and book stores on July 20, 2021.
